Have your Bible open on your lap to Luke 2.
Long ago, people were told, “Go to the place where your family used to live. We want to know how many people there are.”
Mary and Joseph had to go to Bethlehem. Maybe Mary rode on a donkey. Joseph probably walked. It was a long trip to Bethlehem. Mary was tied. Mary was going to have a baby—Jesus, God’s Son.
When Mary and Joseph got to Bethlehem there were so many people! People here. People there. People everywhere. All the people went to sleep at night. There were lots of people but NOT lots of beds. Mary and Joseph had no place to sleep so they stayed in a place where animals slept, like a barn. To feed animals, people put hay in mangers (show Vocabulary Flashcards: Hay). It did not smell good. It was not very nice.
That night, Mary had her baby . . . right there where the animals lived! Mary took cloth, (show Vocabulary Flashcards: Cloth), and wrapped baby Jesus in the soft cloth so he wold be warm and clean. Demonstrate with a small piece of solid color fabric or tissue. She laid him in a manger. Does anyone remember what a manger is? (show Vocabulary Flashcards: Manger).
That night it was very dark. Everyone in Bethlehem was asleep. Near Bethlehem, where there were no houses or lights, some shepherds were watching their sleep. (show Vocabulary Flashcards: Shepherd).
SUDDENLY, an angel was there! A bright light was all around him! The shepherds were scared! He angel said, “Do not be afraid. I have good news. Today in Bethlehem, Jesus was born. He is wrapped up in pieces of cloth (show Vocabulary Flashcards: Cloth) and lying in a manger.”
SUDDENLY the sky was full of angels saying, “Glory to God in the highest,” will you say that with me? Glory to God in the highest. The shepherds went to see Jesus. (show Vocabulary Flashcards: Shepherd). They found him lying in a manger. The shepherds were so excited about the good news. They told other people what happened. The shepherds were so happy.
That good news makes me happy. Jesus came from heaven to earth because he loved us so much. Are you happy too?
